The
Hunt

One groggy Sunday morning my dad and I packed hot
chocolate, deer
sticks, a doe scent
rope, and hand
warmers. We drove
the golf cart into
the wildlife, but a
ways away from our
stands. We walked on
the edge of the
woods looked up and
there was a 6 point
buck and two does!
We cautiously walked
about 26 yards and
stopped. We heard a
crack and looked up
and there he was
about 45 yards in
front of us. Sadly I
couldn’t get a shot
at him, so we walked
to our stands. I
climbed up in my
stand while my dad
climbed up in his.
We watched and
listened for any
sign of movement. At
about 10:45 we came
back to the house to
warm up and watch a
little TV.
Then we headed back out. At about 2:00 we walked back
to our stands and
climbed up again to
listen and watch. I
apparently fell
asleep because my
dad got a picture of
me sleeping.

It was growing dark when we heard a twig snap and we
saw a nice buck walk
right under my dad!
I watched as he
walked out of the
woods and into the
clearing. I put my
gun up and with
adrenaline rushing
through my veins
hoping that he was
going to stop and
turn. As I watched
and waited he caught
scent of the doe
scented rope and
abruptly turned
around. He turned
half broadside and I
put my crosshairs on
him. I thought I was
going to have a
heart attack so I
stopped breathing
for a moment…. Boom
smoke and sparks
went everywhere. I
was sure I hit him,
but he showed no
signs of being hit
and took off
running. I told my
dad after we got out
of the tree stand,
that he wouldn’t
want to be next to
me if I missed
because I would be
very upset. My dad
and I started
looking for blood,
first we found a
tuff of hair, and
then we followed the
blood trail. We were
looking so close
that we didn’t even
notice it was laying
dead about 100 yards
out in the field. I
ran over with such
happiness and said
dad look at the
points… 10 points!
Then we got the golf
cart out and went to
where it was laying.
We had a hard time
loading it up
because it was so
big. And that is the
story of my hunt.
I would like to give a special thanks to John Jelinek
and to the North
West Indiana Chapter
of Waterfowl U.S.A.
for giving youth
hunters like me a
memorable hunt.
Sincerely,
Matt Neises
